What you should know
Once integrated with the bone, a custom crown or bridge can be attached, restoring both function and appearance.
If you're missing most or all of your teeth in an upper or lower jaw, you may also want to explore All-on-X Dental Implants, our full-arch implant solution.
What's Involved
The dental implant process generally includes:
- Consultation and assessment — including a discussion of your goals and a clinical examination, often supported by X-rays or a scan to assess bone structure.
- Treatment planning — your dentist develops a plan tailored to your situation, which may involve referral to or collaboration with a specialist for the surgical placement.
- Implant placement — the titanium implant post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic.
- Healing period — a period of healing allows the implant to integrate with the surrounding bone (a process known as osseointegration).
- Restoration — once healed, a custom crown or bridge is attached to the implant, completing the restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Designed to function similarly to a natural tooth root
- Doesn't rely on adjacent teeth for support, unlike a traditional bridge
- Can help maintain jawbone structure in the area of the missing tooth
- Restorations are custom-made to match your natural teeth
Who It's Suitable For
Dental implants may be suitable for patients missing one or more teeth who have sufficient bone density and good general oral health to support the implant. Certain factors — such as smoking, some medical conditions, or insufficient bone volume — may affect suitability, which your dentist will assess during your consultation. Where bone volume is a concern, additional procedures may be discussed as part of your treatment plan.
For patients missing most or all of their teeth in an arch, our All-on-X Dental Implants page may be more relevant.

What to Expect During Recovery
Some swelling or discomfort is common in the days following implant placement, which your dentist will help you manage. A healing period is required before the final restoration is attached, allowing time for the implant to properly integrate with the jawbone.
