Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges are custom-made restorations used to protect, strengthen or replace teeth. A crown covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth, while a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the surrounding teeth.

Overview

What you should know

Both are designed to restore function and blend naturally with your smile.

What's Involved

Dental Crowns

  1. Assessment — your dentist examines the tooth and discusses whether a crown is the appropriate treatment.
  2. Preparation — the tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown, removing any decayed or damaged material.
  3. Digital scan or impression — used to fabricate a crown that fits precisely.
  4. Temporary crown — may be fitted while your permanent crown is being made, if fabricated off-site.
  5. Fitting — your custom crown is fitted, checked for comfort and bite, and permanently cemented into place.

Dental Bridges

  1. Assessment — your dentist assesses the gap and the health of the surrounding teeth that will support the bridge.
  2. Preparation — the supporting teeth are prepared to hold the bridge.
  3. Digital scan or impression — used to fabricate a bridge custom-fitted to your bite.
  4. Fitting — the bridge is fitted, checked, and cemented into place.

Who It's Suitable For

  • Crowns may be recommended for teeth that are cracked, heavily decayed, worn, or following root canal treatment, where a filling alone wouldn't provide sufficient strength or protection.
  • Bridges may be recommended for patients missing one or more teeth who have healthy, suitable teeth on either side of the gap to support the bridge. For patients without suitable supporting teeth, or who prefer not to prepare adjacent healthy teeth, a dental implant may be discussed as an alternative.

Your dentist will assess your individual situation and discuss which option is most suitable.

Caring for Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges are cared for like natural teeth — regular brushing and flossing, along with check-ups, help your dentist monitor their condition and the health of the supporting teeth and gums underneath.
